Top 5 Dubstep Artists
73
If you aren't familiar with Dubstep music then you probably don't listen to a lot of electronic music to begin with, but that doesn't necessarily mean that you won't like Dubstep. Dubstep is a recently new genre of music that rose from the underground rave scene in the UK. Although it does fall within the larger genre of electronic music, there's plenty of Dubstep that does not resemble the typical electronic sound. Dubstep's roots lie in not only electronic music but also reggae, hip hop, and drum & bass. The five artists/DJs/producers below are 5 of the best in the Dubstep game today.
5. Skrillex
Skrillex (real name Sonny Moore) blew up on the Dubstep scene in 2010 with his EP Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites after signing to Deadmau5 label Mau5trap. Skrillex, who is only 23 years old, doesn't come from an electronic background at all. Before DJing and producing Dubstep/Electro music, Skrillex could be find singing lead for a post-hardcore band and than doing solo gigs.
4. Caspa
Caspa (real life, Gary McCann) is one of the more famous names in the Dubstep genre. He's been making Dubstep type sounds since early to mid 2000's and grew up in the West London area where lots of Dubstep is credited for being invented. He's been known to take popular pop songs and create Dubstep versions. Some of the more famous of his remixes are songs originally done by Ludacris, Miike Snow, and Depeche Mode.
3. Rusko
Rusko (real name, Christopher Mercer) grew up in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England and studied Music Production from Leads College of Music. He became fully immersed into the growing Dubstep underground scene and ended up hooking up in 2006 with Caspa (see above). They both became big on the scene around the same time. Rusko still pumps out some of the best sounds in the game and has even been known to work with some international popstars including Britney Spears and Rihanna.
2. Skream
Skream (real name, Oliver Dene Jones) hails from the west side of London and is often credited as being the first big Dubstep DJ/Producer. Skream, who also is in a group with fellow Dubstep DJ Benga known as 'Magnetic Man', has played an important role, if not the most important role in bringing Dubstep out of the underground scene and to the forefront of electronic music. He's worked with many famous producers and artists in the past, such as Deadmau5, La Roux, and Chromeo.
1. Bassnectar
Bassnectar (real name, Lorin Ashton) is a DJ and producer from California. His wild style and diverse music background has made him one of the few Dubstep artists that has been able to gain fans from all types of music genres. He's been known to drop remixes of songs from Hip Hop to Classic Rock. He personally states that he doesn't do drugs and that his music does not need to be listened to while drug induced. He's one of the few American Dubstep artists who has made an impact on an international scene.
